GILMER (KYTX) - It doesn't really look like the streets of Downtown Gilmer does it, well it never really does when it's time for the East Texas Yamboree.
Thousands of people from all over swarm these very streets to enjoy the food, the fun, the rides and of course, the Yamboree tradition.
"It all started with the Yams, sweet potatoes"
So in 1935, the festival's planning committee decided to name the event after Texas' most popular cash crop, and it became the Yamboree. The event drew crowds from all across the state.
"It's like a tradition, it's been going on several years."
With yam pie judging yam pie sales and all sorts of festival activities.
Christi Shepherd and her daughter say they never miss a festival, and each year the event is bigger and better.
"I'm excited to see just how big it's gonna be, because this looks like a pretty small square."
A small square festival worker Andrea Warren says, will bring big surprises this year.
"I don't know if it was here last year but I know it's the only one in the U.S."
And people's favorite part about coming to the Yamboree is enjoying all of the different foods...
"Love the corn dogs, funnel cakes, hamburgers and french fries."
"Turkey Legs, Sausage on a Stick, Hot Dogs, Nachos."
They enjoy it all with family and friends
"Riding rides and spending time together." ..
And sometimes those you'd never expect to bump into...
"Classmates you haven't seen in years, it's kind of like a big reunion. Plus you get to meet new people from different areas."
