It's Time Texas: UT Tyler students benefit from healthy partnership

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - University of Texas at Tyler is working to give their students the best chance possible to be active and healthy.  A big reason for their success is a partnership between the Health and Kinesiology Department and the Recreational Sports Department.  In our It's Time Texas report, how the partnership is helping students.

Nancy Cervantes takes this intense, athletic enhancement class at UT Tyler every week.  "It's my last semester and I knew I would have to do an internship and I work," says Nancy Cervantes, UT Tyler student.  "So mine as well take a class that is going to help me workout."

But it's not just a good workout, this activity class is lifelong education.  "I am looking into fitness working at a gym so it has been helpful to learn different kinds of workouts and new workout routines to take with me," says Nancy Cervantes, UT Tyler student.

Plus, she and hundreds of other students get elective credit.  "We have one goal for the overall wellness and fitness of our students," says Scott Marzilli, Interim Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Scott Marzilli, who's the Interim Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences says a partnership between the sports rec department and health and kinesiology helps make that possible.

"So, what Bob and I have been able to do is come together and say lets split the cost of this class and so we can offer double the number of classes with the same budget," says Interim Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Back in 2008, there were no UT Tyler students taking courses like yoga, power yoga and tae-kwon-do for credit, now there are more than 250 a semester.

"One of the things the partnership with the kinesiology and rec sports departments allows to do is we offer about 45 fitness classes a week to our campus community," says Bob Hepler, UT Tyler Rec Sports Director.  "Students staff, faculty, and their families have the opportunity to improve their lifestyles each week."

13 of those UT Tyler activity classes are for credit.

For Nancy, it's been life changing, she not only had to buy new jeans, she's more prepared for life after college in sports management.
