(KYTX) - A politically-fueled church sign is causing quite a controversy in a small Texas town near San Antonio.
Reporter Phil Anaya shows us what has people so upset.
In the small town of Leakey, everyone is talking about one thing.
"Well it's been interesting. It's kind of the talk of the town, and everybody has an opinion about it. Phone calls, face book, everything," says Pamela Rice, a resident of Leakey.
All that commotion is about this sign: "Vote for the Mormon, not the Muslim. The capitalist, not the communist." It is a heated campaign season, but the bold words are on the marquis of a non-denominational church.
"I can see why there's some controversy because some people think that the separation of church and state, maybe they shouldn't get involved in it," says Blake Fischer, a tourist who came to see the sign. "But I don't see no problem with them trying to send a message and wake some people up."
Church in the valley is led by pastor Ray Miller. He declined an on camera interview, but told us he's very passionate about this year's election and couldn't resist. We spoke with residents not affiliated with the church and most people told us since it's not their place of worship they're not bothered by it. It's their prerogative. It's their opinion. It's their church.
And while the quiet town of Leakey is now in the spotlight, some business owners are embracing the attention.
"I love it. Even if it's bad attention, bring it on. Come to town see what it's about. Not everybody here hates Obama. Not everybody here loves him. Not everybody hates Romney or loves Romney. Come see for yourself."
Since Church in the Valley has a religious affiliation it's considered a non-profit organization. That means, by law, it can't endorse any political candidate.
