TYLER (KYTX) - The key to student success starts in the home. That's the idea faculty and staff at Ramey Elementary School in Tyler wanted to share at Family Academic Night.
Earnest Minnick has a third grade student at Ramey. He says being involved in his son's education is important to him.
"To make sure he's doing right in class, you know, being a responsible student." says Minnick.
Ramey principal Dr. Alfreddie Felder says parental support is crucial for student's success. That's why they host Family Academic Night twice a year.
"Our parents have a chance to come and visit with teachers and learn a little bit more about our curriculum." says Dr. Felder. "And, what they can do at home to help their students be successful in school."
Teacher Joyclyn Green says parents should read with their kids..
"I ask that my students read 10 to 15 minutes every night. And, practice makes what? Perfect!"
Dr. Felder says parents should also talk to their children about what they're learning in school every day, and take an active role, helping them with homework and projects.
Dr. Felder says you don't have to wait until organized school nights to learn how to be involved in your child's education.
"Teachers have conferences every day and we always encourage parents to come whenever they can."
Keyvon Minnick says he's glad his dad is so involved.
"By coming here and supporting me, by helping me do my work." hey says.
And, nights like this bring their family closer together.
"Just being there for him. I love my son the best way I can." says Minnick.
"I feel like a happy and lucky kid." says Keyvon.
Ramey will host another academic night in the spring. In the meantime, you can always make an appointment to talk with your child's teacher about their education.
