It's Time Texas: Tyler seniors earn President's Active Lifestyle Award

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -  Some seniors at Atria Copeland are proving age is just a number. Almost a dozen seniors just earned the President's Active Lifestyle Award.

This is where you'll find Atria Copeland residents, Sally Smith and Dee Kirkpatrick twice a week for an hour-- sittercising with their friends.

"Anytime there is an exercise class, I want to be there," says Sally Smith.  "We have the greatest teachers here.  They tell us what muscles we are using and what benefit that is.  It really helps you to know what you're doing."

Trainer, Charretta Jeffers works on the seniors balance, flexibility, range of motion and endurance.  The exercises have been life changing for 85 year old, Sally.

"I had 3 back surgeries in a week. I worked out of that into a walker and a cane," says Sally Smith.

Charretta says it's incredibly rewarding to see the seniors overcome limitations with exercise.

"It is amazing.  When you see them walk in and they are not on their walkers anymore and they're doing things, range of motion and haven't been able to lift their arms."

"Charetta, she knows more about our bodies than any fitness trainer I've had," says Dee Kirkpatrick.

On the days that Dee is not at exercise class, she likes to come out here to the Atria Copeland walking trail and get a dose of exercise.

Dee just moved here in may and is already a "champion" for how to live an active lifestyle.

She and ten others at Atria Copeland earned the presidential Active Lifestyle Award-- they did it by exercising 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week for 6 out of 8 weeks.

:I think I have gained muscle with increased walking and some of the things we do in here." says Dee Kirkpatrick.

These seniors plan to stay fit, so they can stay independent for many years to come.

"I want to be independent until I graduate to heaven!" exclaimed Dee.
