Health Alert: Whooping cough vaccine for pregnant women

(CBS) - Government health experts are urging all pregnant women to get a whooping cough vaccination. The purpose is protect newborns who are too young to get the vaccine. 16 people in the U.S. have died from whooping cough this year.


(CBS) - A new study suggests older women who use hormone therapy can reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University studied 17-hundred women, 65 or older, over more than a decade. Those who used hormones within 5 years of menopause had a 30 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer's. Doctors say more research is needed before new recommendations about hormone use are made for older women.


(CBS) - Some advanced cancer patients are over optimistic about their chance of long term survival. A new study in the "New England Journal of Medicine" found 69 percent of patients with advanced lung cancer and 81 percent of those with advanced colon cancer did not understand that chemotherapy was not likely to cure their disease. Researchers say the misunderstanding can pose obstacles to end of life planning.
