TJC approves contractor for new nursing school

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) -- Tyler Junior College is one step closer to building its new nursing and health science center. Board members approved a new contractor in Thursday's meeting.

Board members voted unanimously to hire Tyler-based HGR Contractors and Dallas-based Turner Construction in a deal worth $1.8 million. The companies had to go through a competitive bid process and submit an application showing why they're qualified to work on a project as large as this one.

People from both companies were at the board meeting. They told CBS 19 they're ready to hit the ground running.

"The first thing we'll do with the architect is we'll sort of listen in as the architect works with the academic team here at TJC to formulate the program," Construction Manager Glenn Anderson said.

"They two of them together are just going to form a great team and provide great leadership as we move forward on the biggest construction project in TJC's history," TJC Spokesperson Fred Peters said.

The new nursing and health sciences center will bring new technology to TJC's medical education programs. It's also going to allow the school to graduate more nurses and fill more of the demand for them than ever before.

TJC is hoping it will be open in the spring of 2015.
