Police increase patrols at apartments near UT Tyler

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Residents of the Cambridge and Varsity Place Apartments are seeing a large police presence as officers work feverishly to stamp out a rash of recent acts of violence.

Tyler police spokesman Don Martin said there will be a presence of officers at the two complexes because of the ongoing problems.
"We have patrol officers, bike officers, officers walking the properties and canines at each complex," he said.

The onslaught of police comes on the heels of four shootings, multiple armed robberies and gang fights at the two apartment complexes.

Martin said the department set up an RV trailer at Varsity Place to better serve the area.

"The message here is clear. We are trying to make the residents here feel safe and at the same time show those with criminal intentions that we have no tolerance for any illegal activity," he said.

Martin said two individuals were arrested from Cambridge Wednesday for criminal trespassing.

"They had been told before to stay away from the property, but they came back so they were arrested. We are not going to tolerate any of that type of activity," he said.

Martin said officers continue to work with the apartment management at both locations in hopes to make the area safer.
