Film festival inspires film making in East Texas

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - East Texans are getting a taste of Hollywood.

The Downtown Film Festival is opening doors for those who are breaking into film making this weekend.

The film making community is growing because of it, and even includes your kids.

Students at Robert E. Lee High School are creating possibilities by learning creativity.

"Different angles and stuff. I've learned how to set up lighting and framing and how equipment works," says Kerrigan Keele, a junior.

Keele's taking the new audio-visual class that's teaching him how to make videos, but he's not new to the idea.

"I've done audio all over town," says Keele.

The class was formed because students wanted to learn more about shooting, editing and film making.

"It's really a great opportunity for kids to experience creativity and give them experience in the field that has a lot of opportunity for careers," says Kendra Milan, the audio-visual class teacher.

The idea of having your name on the marquee extends to college students too, like Shea Sexton who's studying film making.

"I used to do a lot of things down in Dallas," says Sexton.

The community is growing in East Texas to get out of the seats and start making what everyone sees. And many say the more exposure, the more that community will continue to grow.

"Film makers always look for an outlet, a place to be heard. So them offering that definitely inspires film makers to make films here in Tyler," says local film maker, Robert Parish.

Parish has a short film in the Downtown Film Festival called "Papa Bear."

"I'm hoping we have the home field advantage when it comes down to it," says Parish.

He says the more opportunity at the box office, means more people wanting to try their hand in film.

The Downtown Film Festival continues through Saturday.
