CHAPEL HILL (KYTX) - East Texans come together to show their support for injured Chapel Hill football player Dorian Timmons. He is in a Dallas hospital after slipping into a coma, following a helmet to helmet hit at practice.
Friday was recognized as "Dorian Timmons Day" at Chapel Hill High School and across the district. Students made T-shirts in his honor and they are selling them to help his family with medical expenses. Principal Andy Owens says they can hardly make enough for the demand. And Friday, Chapel Hill ISD students wore them proudly.
"I didn't know what to expect when I got here." says Principal Andy Owens. "One thing I found out real quick is that it's family."
But, one family member was missing at Friday's pep rally. Even as the football season continues, no one is forgetting about freshman football player Dorian Timmons.
"I want y'all to pray for healing and for strength, not only for Dorian, but for the family." says Owens.
Cousin Brysien Cross says the school support is amazing.
"It's really cool just to know that everybody is supporting him because, you know, it's kind of a hard time for everybody." he says, which is why all the money raised from the T-shirts will go toward helping the Timmons family.
"I have kids coming up every day, "what can we do for Dorian?" says Owens. "They're just wanting to help, wanting to do something, and this is a real good way for them to be able to do that."
Dorian's close friend, Jeffery Minor, is one of many students who purchased a T-shirt.
"Actually, I've seen a lot of people wear this today." says Minor. "Everyone thought they needed to help out."
And, the Chapel Hill community says they will continue to help and pray for Dorian's recovery.
"He is what Chapel Hill is about." says Owens. "I mean, his spirit, his attitude. He is such a gracious and humble kid. And, we miss him. We're ready for him to be back."
The T-shirts are still available for $10 each and anyone can buy them. Principal Owens says if you're interested, just give the high school a call.
Dorian's father says Dorian is still in a coma but bleeding and swelling in his brain have stopped.
Dorian's doctor says being around familiar surroundings could help bring him out of the coma, and the Timmons family is looking into bringing him home.
