Smith County man shoots wife, kills himself

Posted: Updated:

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - We're learning more about what police are calling a murder-suicide near Mineola Friday.

The Smith County Sheriff's Department says 53-year-old James Milton Malone and his wife Karen Malone are both dead.

Investigators say the couple was separated. Karen had filed for a divorce, and went to their house off of County Road 2661 around 6:30 Friday evening to get her attorney some documents.

Investigators say James pulled a handgun and shot Karen before turning the gun on himself.

When Sheriff's Deputies got to the house, Karen was still breathing, but James was dead.

Karen later died at ETMC in Tyler at about 8:00 that night.

The Sheriff's Department says they had been called to the home for civil disputes but no violence had ever been reported.

James Malone had been arrested for parole violation in 2006, and driving with a suspended license in 2002.
