Fake photo of Hurricane Sandy hovering over NYC goes viral

Posted: Updated:

HOUSTON (KHOU) -- No doubt about it, Hurricane Sandy is a dangerous storm, but one image circulating on social media makes it look much worse than it is.

The image shows the Statue of Liberty in the foreground with large circulating clouds in the background. People in New York City were quick to comment on it, saying the storm looked nothing like that as of Monday morning.

In fact, the Photoshopped creation has been circulating on the web since at least 2010, reports Snopes.com.

Despite this, one instance of the photo already had about 80,000 shares on Facebook as of 12 p.m. Monday.

The caption read: "This is an amazing shot of New York today with Frankenstorm bearing down. Nature is so powerful, yet so beautiful."
