Sandy's trail of destruction not over

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Schools, government offices and mass transit systems are shut down across the northeast this morning because of Sandy.

The storm hit shore last night bringing with it high winds, heavy rain and a storm surge that lived up to expectations. Several deaths have already been blamed on the storm and millions of people are without power.

And the weather nightmare still isn't over yet.  A blizzard spawned by Sandy will bring 2 to 3 feet of snow to the mountains of West Virginia by Wednesday morning.

In New York City, flood waters and power outages have already caused many problems. Large areas of Lower Manhattan flooded when a nearly 14-foot storm surge pushed the water into the streets. The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel saw a different type of rush-hour as waters flooded the tunnel leaving it impassable.

The situation turned critical when NYU's hospital lost it's backup generator. Dozens of ambulances lined up to evacuate patients. Nurses manually pumped air to the lungs of those on respirators.
