Health Alert: Overweight teens at risk for kidney problems

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Teens who are overweight or obese are at risk for kidney problems later on. Israeli researchers found obese adolescents were more likely to develop kidney failure as adults. Overweight kids with diabetes were at even greater risk. Doctors say children can control their risk if they lose weight.

(CBS) - Mothers who smoke not only increase their child's chance of getting asthma, but also their grandchildren. UCLA researchers studied rats and found nicotine affected the lungs and DNA of their unborn babies. Many later developed asthma. They were also more likely to have babies with asthma even though there was no exposure to nicotine during pregnancy.

(CBS) - Doctors say laws that ban smoking in public places save lives. California researchers reviewed 45 studies covering smoke free laws. They found hospitalizations for heart attack and stroke dropped 15 percent in states and cities with public bans. There were also fewer emergency room visits for people with breathing conditions.
