When most young couples marry they often make plans to one day start a family. But things don't always turn out the way we plan.
At three years old it seems like there is nothing little Sadie Wallace can't do. But most of all she loves to hear the story of how she came to be. Her mom and dad, Jason and Hallie expected to be parents from the day they were married. But when that time came nothing happened the way they thought it would.
"In the beginning I think you think just like everybody else and when you wanna have kids or even before you'll get pregnant and have kids," says Hallie Wallace, Sadie's mom.
But after months of trying doctors told Jason and Hallie Wallace that their chances of getting pregnant were slim. It was a blow to a couple who believed they were doing all the right things. But now the faith they had trusted for so long was being tested like never before. Jason had a seminary degree, had worked in a church and had joined Pine Cove Ministries. She would begin taking medications but the outlook for pregnancy was not good. But now the faith they had trusted for so long was being tested like never before.
"I worked for a ministry and you know all the "right" answers." And you know about theology and you know about what the Bible says but when it comes to living out your faith it was hard," says Jason Wallace, Sadie's father. "I think the biggest thing was we felt alone. Like we know that other people have difficulty having children. We just felt like we were on an island all by ourselves."
"This was the first time the Lord said you might not get what you want or what you think you want right now and I did not like that. It was definitely frustrating and it was just kinda why, why would God either permit or prevent this for us and our family?," says Hallie.
"You get that feeling of overwhelming weight and discouragement, sad and mad and frustrated and angry. And I was blaming God," says Jason.
The Wallace's finally took their test to a group of fellow believers who would help them find their way back to their faith.
Jason says, "One of the biggest things really was having a community of believers around us to support us, to pray for us. To help us work through some of the things we were talking about and dealing with was amazing."
After more than a year of treatments doctors decided it was time for surgery. It was at a pre-op sonogram that the Wallace's learned a real life lesson of Walking in Faith.
"They flipped the screen around and said well your not going to have surgery you are actually pregnant. And by the way you are four months pregnant," says Jason.
"And looked at her, I mean you could see her. She was 16 and a half weeks so heart beat, arms moving so in the span of a minute so here's your preoperative plan ... come back in two weeks and here are your pre natal vitamins," says Hallie. "Now, looking back, we've talked about several times it's the difference between saying you trust the Lord and really knowing what that is... and really having too. And walking through it and walking in trust and knowing what that's like. I think I thought I knew what that was like before, but for those two years, almost two and a half years, I think we experienced what that is, at least as close as possible."
Sadie by the way is a perfectly healthy little girl. As for Jason and Hallie, they hope their story can help so many other couples in a similar situation continue to Walk in Faith through such a difficult time.
