Police: Thief causes early morning fire, oil spill in southeast Longview

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Authorities say someone took a forklift from a Longview business early Tuesday, resulting in a hydraulic oil spill and fire before fleeing the scene.

Longview Fire Department responded to a fire in the 300 block of Gum Springs Road at about 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to Fire Marshal Johnny Zackary. Firefighters determined the fire originated from an electrical component in the vehicle's dashboard. While fighting the fire, firefighters noticed that about 30 gallons of hydraulic fluid had spilled on Gum Springs and Eastman roads.

Longview police spokeswoman Debra Stiles said it appears the forklift was stolen from a business in the 400 block of South Eastman Road.

"Longview Fire Department originally responded to this," Stiles said. "They contacted us, because things looked a little suspicious."
