Thermal imaging camera limits damage in Monday house fire

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Thermal imaging camera technology is being credited with limiting damage from a Monday evening house fire in north central Longview.

Longview Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 1018 Hillcrest Drive at about 5:30 p.m. Monday. Longview Fire Marshal Johnny Zackary said, upon arrival, firefighters used the camera to pinpoint where the fire originated, which was the ceiling. Fire crews then cut a six-foot-by-six-foot area from the ceiling and put out the fire, with resulted in minimal damage to the rest of the home, Zackary said.

Two people live at the home but were not injured and were not displaced, he said.

"The homeowner, earlier in the day, had plugged in an electric heater to a wall socket that went to an electrical junction in the ceiling," Zackary said. The home uses older wiring that still had a fuse box, but it overheated and didn't blow the fuse.
