Natural disaster charity scams

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - When a natural disaster strikes, so does a desire to help from many people, but the Better Business Bureau has a word of caution before you do.

Many scammers take advantage of people's generosity during natural disasters. The BBB suggests giving cash to avoid identity theft, do some research to make sure it's a legitimate charity, and use caution giving online.

"Go directly to the charity's main web page to make sure your'e actually giving the money to the charity and it's not going to maybe a sound-alike organization that it's very possible may pop up overnight," warned Ogla Mondragon, Director of Investigative Services.

The BBB also said be leery of charities that claim 100% of donations go to relief effort, because there are usually administration costs not mentioned.
