Longview house fire blamed on unattended cooking surface

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - A Longview man was relaxing on his front porch this afternoon when a neighbor drove by and told him the back of his house was on fire, Longview Fire Marshal Johnny Zackary.

Firefighters responded to the structure fire in the 300 block of Davis Street at 12:35 this afternoon. When the arrived, about 25 percent of the house was on fire, Zackary said.

Five people lived at the home, which suffered heavy heat and smoke damage. The American Red Cross has responded to help the residents, who have been displaced by the fire, Zackary said.

Zackary determined that a heating surface used to cook about two hours before the fire was reported had been left partially on and unattended, he said.

No injuries were reported.
