TYLER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - Suspected killer James Calvert had a history of violence against the ex-wife he is accused of fatally shooting Wednesday before allegedly running off with their 4-year-old son and sparking a regionwide manhunt, court documents show.

Smith County judicial records show Calvert was arrested in 1999 for aggravated assault/family violence and had been arrested repeatedly for violating protective orders.
Calvert, who was married to the victim, Jelena Sriraman, from 2004 to 2010, also suffered from psychiatric illness, including depression, according to records from an unsigned court order out of the Smith County 321st District Court earlier this month,

In a signed February 2009 affidavit to the family court, Mrs. Sriraman described a family trip she had taken with her husband and their two children, along with her husband's 10-year-old son from his first marriage in December 2008. The family was traveling to Ohio, where Calvert's family was living.

"We pulled into a parking lot on Dec. 20, 2008. My husband had a breakdown. He removed his handgun from the glove compartment, told me goodbye and to take care of the children and left the car. I couldn't reason with my husband, and I called police. He was off of the Zoloft (an antidepressant) and we drove to his relatives in Ohio. They got him a doctor and he started back on the medicine," the affidavit stated.

Mrs. Srirman also stated in her affidavit that her husband had a protective order against him from his first wife for assault. The affidavit went on to state that on about May 28, 2008, Calvert "slammed a couch in a fit of anger and bumped our (then) 2-year-old and that her husband had guns and a great fondness for them. He has told me in the past that if I do anything to take his guns from him, it would be the worst decision of my life."

She asked the court to restrain Calvert from her job at the Stepping Stone School, where she worked in 2009, because she feared she would be fired.

Calvert and Mrs. Sriraman, following their divorce, were allowed to make joint decisions about the welfare of their two children, a 5-year-old girl and the 4-year-old, court documents show.

But the order stated that Mrs. Sriraman, or Jelena Calvert, as she is referred to in court documents, had "exclusive rights to determine the children's residency within a 500-mile radius of the Smith County courthouse."

Calvert was married to his first wife for three years before their divorce in 2000. The two had a son, now a teenager, who was interviewed by Wade French, a psychologist, in February 2009, court documents show. According to a letter French wrote to the 321st District court, the boy, who was 10 at the time of the interview, described Calvert as "mental."

The letter stated that Deirdre Kring Adams, the boy's biological mother, "filed numerous actions alleging physical and emotional abuse. French stated in his letter that his opinion is that a "legitimate concern exists relative to the physical safety and emotional health of the boy."
