Neighbors say Calvert calm, quiet man

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - We're still learning more about James Calvert after he was captured across the state line in Louisiana less than 24 hours ago.

Calvert is sitting in a jail cell in wash-a-taw parish, Louisiana tonight and police expect to bring him back here to Tyler and the smith county jail in the next few days.

Tyler police hope then they can find out more about what happened.

Robert Hazuka has known James Calvert since high school, they attended Chapel Hill together. Now Hazuka lives next door to where Calvert lived with his mother on Highway 31.

"I've never seen anything bad of him. don't think I can say anything bad, until now," says Hazuka.

Hazuka couldn't believe police were searching for him Wednesday for the murder of his ex wife and the kidnapping of his 4-year-old son, Lucas.

Jelena Sriraman was found shot to death at her Tyler home on Bain Place Wednesday and Lucas was gone.

Jelena was going to take the two children she had with Calvert to Houston to start a life with her new husband.

One of Hazuka's boys played with Lucas when visiting his dad.

"They played with them, not real often. try to stay to ourselves, he stayed to himself," says Hazuka.

"I was hoping it would never come to something like this," says Jennifer Deck, a friend of Jelena's.

Deck shared much of the pain with Jelena during the divorce and custody battle with Calvert.

"There were definitely aggressive acts prior to the divorce," says Cameron Castleberry, Jelena's attorney.

Castleberry says Calvert has a long history of violence including protective orders from both of his ex-wives.

Castleberry even moved his own family into hiding after the shooting.

Neighbors are still shocked..

"I'm praying for his family. His mom's having a hard time with all of this. His friends really having a hard time with this and doing the best we can to support anybody possible," says Hazuka.

We also learned this evening that Calvert was contracted for computer work for Dairy Queen corporate office in Tyler about a year ago.

Jelena's attorney says he was very good with computers, and getting information.

Earlier Thursday police did get the car and some dash cam video from the short chase involving Calvert back as evidence, we also know Calvert had 2 guns in the car with him when he was pulled over.
