Tyler students recycle to help homeless animals

TYLER (KYTX) - Everyday items you're trying to throw away may be just the thing to help pets who need good homes.

But Tyler students are keeping items out of the trash, and helping animals.

Kids full of questions, with bags full of cans in hands, learn more about two rescued dogs from Tonya Griffith.

"She was being taken care of by an elderly woman that just died from cancer in September," says Griffith about a dog that's been in her care off and on for years, Shannon, who needs a home.

Sharona needs one too.

They're two of more than 100 animals Griffith cares for at her shelter, Tammy Griffith's Animal Rescue.

She needs to build new dog pens to house them.

"We help elderly, low income, disabled people with their pets as well," says Griffith.

Students at Bonner Elementary are helping the cause.

10-year-old Raiven brought 40 cans to recycle and raise money.

"How much do you think those cans will get you?" we asked.

Raiven Craig said, "I be you more than $40."

Stephanie Jones and other teachers at Bonner organized this to help students learn about contributing to the community.

"These caring values that we share with you, you can pass on to other people," says Stephanie Jones.

These toner cartridges get about 50 cents a piece and printer ink cartridges get between 50 cents and 4 dollars. Being in a school, it can all pile up. But the kids are trying to one up that and ask businesses to get involved.

Trash to treasure, to help animals in East Texas.

"I feel good about myself for doing this for all the dogs and all the animals that don't have homes," says Jose Fidel Segura, a fifth grader recycling to help the animals.

If you would like to help, Bonner is taking donations of cans and cartridges.
