Alcohol vote in Tyler and Precinct 2 to impact outside stores, city revenue

Posted: Updated:

Coffee City (KYTX) -- Kilo Discount Beverage Store in Coffee City has been a staple since 1969.

"We have a lot of regulars that have been coming here for years," Tim Rickerd, Manager of Kilo's Liquor Store, said.

He says that loyal base may get smaller now, with alcohol initiatives passing in Tyler and Precinct 2. "It's going to slow business down a lot since people will be able to just go to Brookshires and get a 30-pack," Rickerd said.

He and others say the one good thing about the election last night, is that it didn't include liquor sales.

"If liquor would have went, we would have been doomed. I'm glad it's just beer and wine," Rickerd said.

The city of Winona was one of the first to go wet in Smith County. Mayor Rusty Smith says he knew it was only a matter of time before that changed. "As disappointed as I am in losing the revenue, I also see it as a good thing for Tyler," Smith said.

But that good thing threatens some Winona businesses. Smith says 6 stores who sell only alcohol could close, which would have a trickle-down effect. "I estimate up to a 60 percent reduction in sales tax"

He says most of Winona's sales tax revenue depends on the sale of alcohol. It's been spent mainly to make upgrades and repairs in the community.
