Alcohol coming to the city of Lakeport

Posted: Updated:

LAKEPORT/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Skinner's is one of the many businesses that approved the two propositions that passed Tuesday.Proposition 1 allows the local retail sell of beer and wine while proposition 2 eliminates the former need of a membership to order mixed drinks in Lakeport restaurants.

"This is their town and it's up to them whether we sell this or not and last night we felt like they've spoken."

Stephen Skinner is the owner of Skinner's Grocery in Lakeport and says people in the city needed this change.

"They want restaurants, they want new stores, they want growth...the traffic is here for that."

Pat Hightower has been against the sale of alcohol in the city, and just found out about the propositions passing.

"I was not pleased from the results of that, there are so many alcohol related deaths in the Lakeport area."

"People that drink are going to get it one way or the other, might as well keep the money here at home."

Money Skinner says the city of Lakeport could put to good use.

"Repairing roads, helping with sewer systems, expanding growth for new businesses to consider Lakeport as an option."

Skinner says his store provides everything his customers want and need and his says in the grocery business beer and wine have become expected.

"People only want to go one place, they want a one stop shop."

With there being 3 liquor stores a quarter mile away, that wasn't enough to convince Hightower.

"Right across the river you can go get anything you want."

But the people have spoken and a decision has been made.

"Those that don't want to drink, don't have to."

"Whether they purchase or not we appreciate all of our customers."

The numbers do show that 2/3 of voter did voice support for both propositions. Proposition one was approved with a vote of 222 to 127, while proposition 2 was approved with a vote of 246 to 114.

The owner of Skinners grocery in Lakeport says as soon as the city OK's the alcohol ordinances, the company will file for a state license to sell alcoholic beverages. He believes customers could start seeing beer and wine on his shelves by early January.
