MOUNT VERNON (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) -- A home invasion robbery in Wood County ended with authorities shooting the alleged suspect Wednesday afternoon in Franklin County after a wild chase and ramming of police cars, authorities said.

Franklin County Sheriff Paul Fletcher said the man was shot near Mount Vernon at a business when he tried to ram through police cars blocking him in a driveway.According to EMS traffic about 4 p.m., the man was shot at least three times, but was being combative with paramedics working on him. Fletcher would not confirm the man was shot multiple times, but said, "Multiple shots were fired, the suspect was hit, and no officers were injured."

Fletcher said the suspect, who authorities were trying to identify late Wednesday, forced his way into a home in the Winnsboro area and fired at least one shot at the home owner during the robbery. He said he did not believe the homeowner was injured.

"The suspect was able to get out of the house and into a vehicle and traveled north into Franklin County. One of my deputies saw him on (Texas Highway) 37 and gave chase," he said.

Fletcher said as the chase continued it crossed several roadways and multiple police agencies became involved.

"They tried to utilize the spike strips, but he was able to go around those. He finally turned into a driveway at the Wooden Acres Tool Rental on Farm-to-Market Road 115 and one of the other police departments assisting used his vehicle to block the suspect, but the suspect rammed him. One of my deputies used his car and that is when the shootout began," he said.

Fletcher said he was not sure if the suspect, who he described as a white male in his late 20s, fired any shots, but stated the man was armed.

"The Texas Rangers are taking over this investigation and will be handling it from here. We did not have any civilians or officers hurt, but the suspect was shot and has been transported to a hospital," he said.
