Texas state veterans home honors East Texas brothers

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Young people of the community pay their respects to the men and women who have gone before them.

"Every generation as Ronald Reagan says, has responsibility to defend this freedom. Because we are one generation away of not having that freedom," said Gen. James "Red" Brown.

In the audience are Michael and Kelly Hitt, their two sons, Chad and Chris, are both in the Army.

25-year-old Sergeant, Chad Hitt, was recently deployed to Afghanistan, a few weeks after becoming a new father.

His 28-year-older brother, Chris, is a pilot stationed at Fort Drum in New York.

"There's not a whole lot of fathers who can say their sons are there heroes," said Michael Hitt.

Both brothers have been to Iraq fighting on the front lines for our freedom.

Friday, their parents were presented with the blue star banner from the American Legion.

The banner has a blue star for each family member serving in the United States military.

"We pray everyday for their safety and their platoon's safety," said Kelly Hitt.

Chris joined the Navy right after 9/11, before moving to the Army. His brother followed behind him just a few years later.

"They're actually just kids fighting for us to do what we want to do," said Michael Hitt.

A strong bond of bravery among these two brothers.

"They honor you and they honor the legacy that you have given them with the freedom you have provided, they continue to fight for that freedom today," said Gen. Brown.

They stand for the American flag as those before them once did, and just like those after them will do.
