East Texans help Sandy victims

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - People in the Northeast have taken a one-two punch from Hurricane Sandy, and now a nor-Nor'Easter that blew through Wednesday.

Many organizations from East Texas have headed to the region to help, others are giving financial donations, as millions struggle without power, food, or roofs over the heads.

People in New York and New Jersey are waiting in long lines and being turned away from gas stations.

"They're not letting us in line and I need gas to pick up my daughter," says a woman trying to get past the gas ration lines.

"I predict by Monday morning when everybody gets up, for an overwhelming majority of the state, life will be back to what they perceive as normal," says New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

But frustration is mounting as people have trouble getting necessities for their families, diapers, water, even blankets.

But East Texans can head to Army Recruiting centers to help.

The Army is take donations of everyday items like toilet paper, cleaning supplies like garbage bags, disinfectant and laundry detergent.

Even things for your kids like shampoo, and everyday toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors.

And financial donations go a long way.

"The Red Cross can take the money donated and stretch those dollars to at least double what they are by buying locally," says Linda Edwards with the Smith County Red Cross.

Edwards says along with money, the Red Cross still needs volunteers to be trained to relieve the 8 workers they have in place in the Northeast now.

"The situation going on right now could go on for months and month," says Edwards.

"We will need outside assistance like we have had in the aftermath of the storm," says Gov. Christie.

We also spoke with Oncor, the company has sent 400 workers and contractors to the Northeast to help in recovery efforts to restore power.

That's two waves of workers that have been there for nearly two weeks.

Red Cross workers from East Texas are helping with everything from shelter work to supply distribution to healthcare.
