Health Alert: Cigarette warning labels effective

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new study finds graphic warning labels on cigarettes are effective. The labels are used in 40 foreign countries. Doctors at the Medical University of South Carolina tested them on 1-thousand American smokers. Most smokers said the pictures made them think about quitting more than current print warnings. The FDA planned to use the labels in this country but earlier this year a federal court blocked the warnings saying it wanted more evidence they work.

(CBS) - 3D technology is now making it easier for doctors detect breast cancer. Hospitals are just starting to use 3 dimensional mammography and a new study in the journal radiology finds its more effective. Researchers say 3D is accurate 91 percent of the time compared to 87 percent for the standard 2 dimensional test.

(CBS) - Fewer babies are being born premature. The March of Dimes found early births dropped from 12 point 8 percent in 2006 to 11 point 7 percent last year. The improvement comes after a national campaign urged doctors not to schedule deliveries early - unless there was a medical reason to do so.
