LUFKIN (KYTX) - Police in Lufkin have arrested a man in connection to an attempted robbery that occurred Nov. 5.

Anthony Dewayne Bond, 23, is charged with false statement to obtain property, a state-jail felony, according to LPD Detective J.B. Smith.

"The Angelina County District Attorney's office decided not to pursue robbery charges and instead charge him with false statement to obtain property," Smith said.

Bond reportedly walked into First Bank & Trust, located at 541 S. Timberland Dr., and presented a teller with a withdrawal slip for a checking account. When asked for identification, Bond declined. The name "Ryan Thomas" with an account number was written on the slip, but the teller was unable to locate an account. When the teller looked at the slip again, Bond had written "Empty all money in Bag," according to an affidavit.

Bond fled the scene after the teller walked away from the counter.

After several tips, including one from a Nacogdoches County sheriff's officer who attended school with the suspect, officials identified Bond.

Police obtained a warrant for Bond's arrest on Nov. 9. He was booked into the Angelina County Jail on the same day. Texas Ranger Travis Brazil made the arrest.

Bond is being held on additional charges of burglary of a building in Angelina County in 2012 and a Montgomery County warrant for robbery. His bail totals $120,000.
