Gladewater man shot after high-speed chase dies

Posted: Updated:

TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH (KYTX) - A man, who was shot by Franklin County deputies after allegedly breaking into a Wood County home and leading authorities on a high speed chase, died in a Tyler hospital on Monday afternoon.

Franklin County Sherriff Paul Fletcher Jr. confirmed Jonathan Love, 29, of Gladewater, died at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler on Monday afternoon.

Fletcher said last week the man now identified as Love was shot at a business near Mount Vernon when he tried to ram through police cars blocking him in a driveway on Nov. 7.

Fletcher would not confirm the man was shot multiple times, but said, "multiple shots were fired, the suspect was hit, and no officers were injured."

Love allegedly forced his way into a home in the Winnsboro area and fired at least one shot at the homeowner during the robbery, though the homeowner is not believed by police to have been injured.

Love then fled from the home and was spotted by Franklin County deputies on Texas Highway 37, officials said.

Multiple agencies were involved in the chase that followed.

"They tried to utilize the spike strips, but he was able to go around those. He finally turned into a driveway at the Wooden Acres Tool Rental on Farm-to-Market Road 115 and one of the other police departments assisting used his vehicle to block the suspect, but the suspect rammed him. One of my deputies used his car and that is when the shootout began," Fletcher previously said.

Franklin said the four deputies who were involved in the situation returned to work Tuesday, but the incident remains under investigation by the Texas Rangers.
