Bill would let students earn tuition with community service

Posted: Updated:

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Some good news for Texas families worried about paying for college. A bill filed in the state legislature would give high school students the opportunity to earn tuition credit for doing certain community service work.

Representative Eddie Lucio filed HB 66 with the hopes of establishing a program that he believes would be a perfect public-private partnership. "I know industry has the desire to have a qualified workforce, well they're gonna have a qualified workforce who has had involvement in their community" he said.

Lucio said those concerned about the state budget have expressed concerns. He argued, "We worry about the state budget but that revenue comes from having Texans, with good paying jobs, who are paying taxes."

HB 66 would establish a pilot program awarding prepaid tuition at public institutions to high school students that volunteer at approved charities.
