Harlem Globetrotter to speak Monday at TJC

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX)M - Harlem Globetrotter and motivational speaker Melvin Adams will speak 6:30 p.m., Monday Nov. 19, in Wise Auditorium on the Tyler Junior College main campus.

Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is hosting the event in collaboration with TJC student organizations, as part of the Community College Completion initiative.

Adams will discuss the events that occurred in his life and the obstacles he overcame which led to him being the success he is today; and he will stress the importance of making good grades and completing college.

He promises to have the audience on its feet and with him on the stage with his fast-paced, musical, motivational message.

His passion for reaching America's youth has provided countless opportunities to speak, perform and share with groups.

Born in 1971 and raised in the ghetto of Houston, Adams overcame incredibly negative circumstances in his life to achieve his dream of playing professional basketball. At age 13, his father died; and with the pressure of being financially strapped and surrounded by hopeless situations, he turned to sports. He attributes hard work and endless practice to keeping him out of trouble.

Adams graduated from San Jose Christian College where he was a two-time NCAA III All-American basketball player. He remains the all-time leader in scoring, assists and steals in the Warriors history. After college, he continued to focus on basketball and was given the opportunity to play basketball professionally.

He later joined the Harlem Globetrotters and has been named Mr. Globetrotter numerous times. This award is presented yearly to the teammate that most exemplifies the excitement and energy associated with the Harlem Globetrotters.
