Fit City Success: East Texas man turns to boot camp for triathlon training

Posted: Updated:

WHITHOUSE (KYTX) - A decision to join his wife training for a triathlon changed an East Texas man's life. Chuck McPherson not only dropped a lot of weight, he's much healthier now and has found Fit City Success.

Chuck McPherson made several changes before taking on his second triathlon.  The hardest for him was giving up Dr. Pepper and fast food.  But, he also started a more intense training regimen.

"I was about 40 pounds heavier than I am now.  In September of last year I did my first triathlon.  My wife got me into that and I barely made it through and I was like I want to do better next year," says Chuck McPherson.

Chuck tackled his first triathlon at 245 pounds.  He says he couldn't get through the running portion without walking.  That's why he started boot camp to work on his entire body.

The benefits weren't just external for Chuck.  "My doctor was on me about the cholesterol and she said if you don't do something we are going to put you on cholesterol medicine.  I said 'ok, I will drop the weight,'" says Chuck.  "When I started my cholesterol was 224 and I have dropped it all the way down to 161."

Boot Camp also helped Chuck shave 12 minutes off his triathlon time this year and he ran the entire 5K.  Chuck's advice for Fit City Success-- change to healthy habits now, so it's easier to maintain as you get older.  Chuck's biggest goal for next year is to compete in the Tyler Half Ironman at Lake Tyler and to maintain where he is right now.
