WalMart Strikes Planned Across the Country

Posted: Updated:

(KCEN) -- WalMart workers in several cities have walked off the job to protest the company's efforts to silence employees who speak out for better jobs.

Apparently this is just the beginning for the so-called WalMart Strikers.

A thousand protests are planned in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Milwaukee and Washington DC, as well as in Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Minnesota.

The protests in WalMart stores and warehouses started yesterday morning in southern California and yesterday afternoon, workers in San Leandro, California left their jobs. This morning employees in Seattle joined in the effort.

Though specific locations and times for protests and strikes are not being released, the employees say the strikes are planned from now until and on Black Friday.

WalMart employees say they are speaking out about the manipulation of hours and benefits, the efforts to try to prevent people from working full-time and discrimination against women and people of color.

Many workers are also not happy about the early start to Black Friday, saying their work schedules will prevent them from spending Thanksgiving with their families.

There are no reports yet of any strikes at local WalMart stores, but we will update this story if more information becomes available.
