Update: Man suspected of killing grandmother facing capital murder charges

Posted: Updated:

RAINS COUNTY (KYTX) -- 33-year-old Brandon Couch is behind bars in Rains County and facing capital murder charges in connection to his grandmother's shooting death. His arrest follows a 4-hour manhunt yesterday, through the work of several different agencies.

Authorities credit tips from people in Point for helping them catch the suspect.

Sheriff's deputies from the Rains County Sheriff's office found 78-year-old Mattie Couch dead in her home Wednesday afternoon. She reportedly was shot once in the chest.

Brandon, her grandson, lived with her. "She was the caregiver, giving him a place to stay," Brad Strawn, Chief Deputy of the Rains County Sheriff's Office, said.

Strawn reports Brandon was near the home when they arrived, but they lost track of him when he ran into the woods behind the house. He eventually made contact with someone living off  FM 1402, who then called police.

"After we got the tip that he was down in this general area, we had multiple agencies down here along with Garland PD Canine," Jordan Aly, with the Rains County Sheriff's Department, said.

Couch surrendered peacefully and the weapon believed to be used in the crime was also found near his location.

The news is shocking former classmates. "We didn't think he was capable of something like this," says a woman we are calling "Sara" to hide her identity.

Sara said Brandon didn't have many friends at Rains High."He was bullied a lot, even my brothers bullied him, so maybe it's something that built up," Sara said.

Brandon's bond is set at $750,000.
