Health Alert: Smoking bans protect more people

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The CDC says that smoking bans now protect almost half of Americans. That's a big jump from 12 years when only 3 percent of Americans were protected. Smoking in restaurants, bars and other workplaces is now banned in 30 of America's 50 largest cities. Researchers say the bans reduce second hand smoke which in turn lower heart attacks and other tobacco related illnesses in non smokers.

(CBS) - An acid found in fish may be connected to post partum depression. Canadian researchers found that omega-3 levels drop during pregnancy. Scientists believe omega-3 influences the brain chemical serotonin, which regulates mood. Doctors say more study is needed to confirm the link.

(CBS) - The number of Americans with diabetes is skyrocketing across the nation. The Centers for Disease Control says since 1995 cases jumped 50 percent in 42 states and 100 percent or more in 18 states. Doctors say the obesity epidemic is a major reason for the increase.
