Tyler Boy Scouts collect food for the hungry

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Boy Scouts in Tyler are learning compassion as they collect food for the hungry just before Thanksgiving.

Saturday, troops collected canned goods during their Scouting for Food drive.

2-year-old Boy Scout Brandon Skinner spent his Saturday focused on those in need.

"It just makes me really happy to help," he said. "If there's any way I can help people out there, I want to be a part of it."

He's been a part of the Scouting for Food drive the last few years.

Skinner's Scout Master Seth Holloway says, "It's a two week adventure, especially during this Thanksgiving season when people are needing food and other things."

Last week the troops[ went door to door dropping off bags in Tyler neighborhoods, asking people to fill them with non-perishable food items. This week, they picked up all those bags, full of food.

Holloway says as his scouts walked door to door picking up food, they learned life lessons.

"It teaches them valuable principles: charity, giving."

The Boy Scouts collected a total of 90 bags, and in the end that adds up to a total of 420 pounds of canned goods.

"There's a lot of generous people in Tyler that are willing to help people in need," Skinner said.

That's a good thing, because 1 in 4 children, 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 7 seniors in East Texas are at-risk of hunger.

"The people who are going to be getting this food are those who have lost their jobs recently, those who have had unusual circumstances, and others who are just down in a rut, and need help," Holloway said.

"This is just one way to help and it's just great to be a part of it," Skinner said.

The East Texas Food Bank feeds the hungry year round. In 2011, 18 million pounds of food was distributed to hungry East Texans, equaling about 15 million meals.
