Candelight vigil held for victims in Midland train collision

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - The Midland community mourns the death of those killed Friday after a train collided with a float carrying wounded veterans.

Hundreds attended a candlelight vigil held Saturday night to remember victims and their families.

Four veterans were killed and 16 others were injured.

Those who attended the vigil say the community's response is helping heal the wounds.

"Grief is terrible, but when it is shared, it is softened," says Texas Representative Mike Conaway. "Tonight, we share grief among ourselves, and those who have been affected by this."

Investigators say proper warnings did go off as the train approached -- but they still don't know how the crash happened.

The national transportation safety board will stay on the scene until it has some answers.
