Update: Roads reopened after major gas spill in Van Zandt County

Posted: Updated:

Martins Mill, TX (KYTX) -- It's a race against the clock for environmental crews cleaning up a gasoline spill in Van Zandt county.

Nearly 5,000 gallons of gasoline spilled onto FM 1653 Monday morning after a tanker truck overturned. It closed a mile stretch of the road until early Tuesday.

"He said, the curve just kind of slipped up on him," Liston Barber, a property owner who lives right by the crash site, said.

Barber was among the first to talk to the Expressway Transport driver. "He was in a pretty tight spot there when we first got down here," Barber said.

The driver wasn't seriously hurt, but the environment around him wasn't. "If you get a big spill like that, where there's a lot of vapors, one spark could make it a huge explosion," Tim Johnson, Chief of the Tyler Fire Department, said.

To avoid further damage, the Department of Public Safety closed off the road and called in the Tyler Fire Department's Hazmat team to spray the soil. "Foam goes over it, and forms a blanket where it suppresses that vapor," Johnson said.

Now every minute counts. "The longer you wait to clean up, the deeper it goes, and it'll end up in the water system," Jay Fuller, owner of Fuller Environmental, said.

Fuller is in charge of making sure all the contamination is gone. "We're going to remove the soil, we'll replace it with clean soil and replant the grass," Fuller said.

It's a process he says will take days.

We spoke to the manager of Expressway Transport out of Waco, who reports the company nor the driver has been issued any citations. The TCEQ could issue a fine if it's determined the spill is not properly cleaned up.
