Turkey tradition continues for East Texas family

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - Between now and Christmas day, more than 200,000 birds will be sold.

Sam Greenburg says it all started when his grandfather began smoking turkeys for family and friends in a corner of his dairy barn.

Word spread about his delicious gifts, and by the 1940s his father fulfilled the family's first official order—a request from 100 miles away in Dallas.

Not much has changed since those days.

He says they still smoke turkeys the way his grandfather did—seasoned with the family spice recipe and slow-cooked over a hickory fire.
