Salvation Army prepares for giant Thanksgiving meal

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - For those without a home this Thanksgiving, the Salvation Army is getting ready to serve up a warm meal too.

Volunteers spent the day shaving and cutting 5,000 pounds of sweet potatoes, peeling onions, and unwrapping pies. More than 1,000 people are expected to take part in the Thanksgiving feast.

Volunteers like Larry Johnigan said serving others is a blessing. "As a follower of Christ we have to do our part in serving the community, helping others, and trying to do what we can to encourage them on Thanksgiving. After all, we've been given a lot so we're thankful."

Lunch will be served from 11:30am to 1pm Thursday at the Center of Hope, 633 N. Broadway Ave. Tyler.
