Making your Thanksgiving meal affordable

Posted: Updated:

Tyler (KYTX) -- Stores are packed with last-minute shoppers needing to get groceries for Thursday. If you have several mouths to feed, it's easy for spending to get out of hand on Thanksgiving.

Shoppers like Tracy Jackson, in charge of the family Thanksgiving meal, and that includes all the fixin's.

"I've bought dressing, cranberry, salad, broccoli, and rice," Jackson said.

She's cooking for 26 people this year and has managed to keep her bill under $200 through coupons and recent specials.

"If you take 15 minutes, sit down and look. I saved about 15 dollars in coupons last week," Jackson said.

That's a good thing because according to the American Farm Bureau Federation, the average cost of a Thanksgiving meal for ten people is up this year by 28 cents. Store managers at Brookshire's stores, recommend buying generic if you need to shave costs.

"I think our store brands are equivalent to a lot of the national brands, at a much cheaper more competitive price," Allan Bussey, Store Director, said.

It's what Nicki Wynne does."Everything I bought is the store brand. It saves you money," Wynne said. She recommends making a dish with inexpensive ingredients, like green bean casseroles.

Consumer experts also recommend sharing the load, and doing a potluck dinner, so the burden doesn't fall on one person.
