Malnourished horses seized in Rusk County

Posted: Updated:

UPSHUR COUNTY (KYTX) - Six animals are taken from a Rusk County home after investigators found they were malnourished. Three dogs with no food or water, tied to trees and three horses that were hundreds of pounds underweight.

Visible ribs, protruding hip bones and very little energy.

These horses were brought to Safe Haven Equine Rescue in Upshur County Wednesday morning.

But they were all found at a home in Rusk County, each about 200 pounds underweight.

"You cannot tell he's a stallion because he's so starved, undernourished," says Richard Fincher.

Fincher and his wife, Debbie, will care for the 2 mares and stallion for now.

"This doesn't happen overnight, these horses have been going down since September," says Fincher.

"Found out who the owners were and he contacted the owners and let them know, gave them information on what they needed to try to do to improve the animals," says Sgt. Viki Penny with the Rusk County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office isn't releasing the names of the owners, but tells us the horses were found on FM 1662 close to Laneville.

Deputies first got a call about a problem in September.

"In a dirt pen and there was no grass, no vegetation what so ever for the horses to eat, or hay," say Sgt. Penny.

It will take about 5 to 6 months of feeding to get the horses to a healthy weight, so they can be adopted.

Now the Finchers start nursing them back to health.

"Like you have the flu, and you only want chicken soup, you eat just a little bit to get you going. So they'll be fed several times during the day, just a little at a time," says Fincher.

With nourishing food, and a lot of attention.

The dogs are being cared for at another location.

There will be a hearing Tuesday to decide if the owners will face charges and who will get custody of the horses.
