UPDATE: According to DPS officials, Interstate 10 in Jefferson County is reopen after this mornings multi-car accident.

JEFFERSON COUNTY (KBMT) - Injured people from this morning's multiple-vehicle pileup on Interstate 10 have been taken to four hospitals in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area and at least one person was taken to Baytown.

Acadian Ambulance spokesperson Denise Richter at 11:35 a.m. told 12 News patients have been taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont, Baptist Hospital in Beaumont, The Medical Center of Southeast Texas, Christus Hospital St. Mary in Port Arthur and one person was taken to a hospital in Baytown.

12 News spoke with Richter again at 12:06 p.m.  The number of patients taken to hospitals had grown to 51.  She said eight of the people transported were in critical condition.

Richter said Acadian Ambulance has more than 22 ambulances working the scene and multiple supervisors on site.

Acadian does have a mutual aid agreement with other ambulance companies if more equipment is needed.  Richter did not know if the agreement had to be utilized with this accident.

Baptist Hospital spokesperson Mary Poole spoke with 12 News just after noon.  She said Baptist Hospital received 19 patients from the accident.  Two of the patients, one adult and one child, were in critical condition.  They were transferred to Memorial Hermann in Houston.

Poole said Baptist Hospital was notified just after the accident happened that it would be receiving extra patients.  The hospital went into "disaster mode" and called in an extra Emergency Room physician.  She said hospital staff members from different floors were put on standby in case they were needed to help in the E.R.

Christus Hospital in Beaumont is treating at least eight patients from the accident.

Danielle Pardue, Marketing and Communications Manager, said the hospital's E.R. is a level 3 designated trauma center and was ready for the patients who arrived.

"Our physicians and staff are always prepared for emergencies such as this," said Pardue.

No additional staff members were called in for the extra number of patients.
