"Black Friday" kicks off holiday shopping season

Posted: Updated:

KYTX (TYLER) - It's the day many shoppers spend all year waiting for -- Black Friday.

Some people even skipped their Thanksgiving meals just to camp out, hoping to be the first in line to get their hands on some great deals. Broadway Square Mall in Tyler was just one of the many places that opened their doors early to customers.

When the doors opened to JcPenney, a herd of people calmly walked in trying to grab everything on their Christmas shopping list.

Among them, a family made up of a mother, two daughters, and this year they even brought a nephew.

"They let me be in the mix this year and I'm pretty excited about it, it's pretty crazy though," said Tyler Thomison.

This group of ladies have made Black Friday a family tradition. They plan weeks in advance to make sure they find the best deals.

"We get our ads, we get our list, we know where we're going. If you're not organized, you're going to miss the best deals," said Shanda Booth.

This year, a lot of stores opened early, some on Thanksgiving night, to attract customers who didn't want to wake up early in the morning.

Anthony Deleon is the Assistant Manager at Buckle. They opened at midnight for the first time.

"We've probably done the best we've done, so far, since every Black Friday, since we opened," said Anthony Deleon.

Retail analyst expect Black Friday sales will be up between 2% and 3% from last year.

"I've never seen the mall so packed the way it is right now," said Thomison.

But by Sunday morning, they expect shopper traffic to be back to normal as the Black Friday shoppers take a day of rest.

Black Friday is the official kick-off to the holiday shopping season.  The National Retail Federation expects some 147 million to hit the stores this weekend.
