Health Alert: Americans eat too much salt

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Researchers say 90 percent of Americans eat too much salt. Doctors say too much sodium can increase blood pressure and the risk for stroke and heart disease. The Centers for Disease Control is now funding campaigns to take on the problem. The agency is looking at local programs similar to those that helped implement menu calorie labeling and smoking bans.

(CBS) - Doctors say second hand smoke from just one cigarette in a car is very unhealthy for a child. California researchers measured air quality in the back seat of a car while the driver smoked with the window down. They found pollutant levels - including nicotine and carbon monoxide - were three times higher inside the car. Second hand smoke can increase a child's risk of asthma and allergies.

(CBS) - Traumatic brain injuries may be much more common than first thought. According to a study out of New Zealand 55 million people suffer a TBI every year, but researchers say they believe 95 percent of the cases are mild and usually do not require a visit to the hospital. A traumatic brain injury is a bump or blow to the head that disrupts normal brain function.
