Donating to Red Cross this holiday, made easier online

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Non profit organizations are relying on the Internet and social media more than ever.

The Red Cross is taking advantage of Cyber Monday this year to remind the public how easy it is to help those who need help this holiday, like still struggling Hurricane Sandy victims. All it takes to help is the click of a mouse, or the tap of a finger.

Brent Zimmerhanzel bought an unconventional holiday gift this Cyber Monday.

"I got on my smart phone, typed in Red Cross."

Then, he made a donation.

"You can make a donation in the honor of whoever you'd like

He made a donation to Hurricane Sandy victims, in honor of his friends and coworkers at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

"I work in the power industry, so it's important to me because I've seen the aftermath of these storms and right now I still have friends that are restoring power from hurricane Sandy," Zimmerhanzel says.

Linda Edwards with the Smith County Red Cross is thankful for people like Zimmerhanzel, who donate to Sandy victims.

"Sandy is just overwhelming in the need," Edwards says. "Plus, we're going into winter which is just going to compound the issues."

She says people are more likely to help if donating is easy.

"This year we're really getting into more of the social media, Facebook, Twitter, etc.," she said.

At all of those locations, you can find a link to the Red Cross Holiday Giving Catalog, and give to whatever cause you'd like.

Zimmerhanzel points out on his smart phone, "You can make it into an e-card, a printed card, have it sent by mail, or by email."

He hopes others will realize how easy it is to get online, and donate.

"I thought it was great! I thought it was convenient, thought it was efficient, it's a great thing that's probably going to help more donations for sure," he said.

By sending money,  he's helping to those who need it most.

When you donate, you can choose any fund, whether it's Sandy, U.S. soldiers, or an even East Texas family who lost their home to a fire.

Your gift can range anywhere from $15 to $5,000. Anything you give will make a difference.

If you do want to donate in the more conventional way, without using the Internet, catalogs are available at the Red Cross in Tyler. You can also bring donations directly to any Red Cross office at any time.
