About 50 applications to sell wine, beer received in Tyler, Smith County

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - So far about 50 applications to sell beer and wine in Tyler and southern Smith County have been filed.

Merchants are beginning the process to put alcoholic beverages in their stores just weeks after voters approved such sales.

Danny Mogle from our news partners at the Tyler paper joins us with the update.

Danny, how many applications are for stores in Tyler versus out in the county.

As of this afternoon the city had received 39 applications and the county clerk had received applications for 7 businesses that are located in unincorporated areas of southern Smith County.

What happens when an application is filed?

City spokeswoman Susan Guthrie says that the first thing the city does is to make sure the business meets zoning and distance requirements. For example if your business is close to a school or church, you're not allowed to sell beer and wine and the application is rejected.

If it meets zoning requirements, the application is forwarded to the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission for further review.

We are told the entire permit process can take about two months.

How many applications are officials expecting to receive? The city says it is expecting to receive about 100 applications.

And the county says it estimates it will receive about  30 applications.
