Lon Morris bankruptcy auction

Posted: Updated:

JACKSONVILLE (KYTX) - Businesses and organizations will soon get to bid on buildings at Lon Morris College.

This fall, Lon Morris College declared bankruptcy and shut down just before classes began.

A judge decided the private Methodist college could hold an auction and use the money to pay back its debt, including salaries of former employees.

"This facility was built in 1964 I believe," said Brent Wellings, Ameribids Regional Director.

The Lon Morris gymnasium, where the bearcats won many championship basketball games, is one of the many buildings up on the auction block.

"This school is the oldest college west of the Mississippi founded in 1884," said Wellings.

Wellings took us across the campus, that is almost like a ghost town these days, showing us executive offices where important decisions were once made.

"It's easy to imagine some different uses." said Wellings.

Across campus, the Lon Morris library still has books on the shelf that haven't been touched since the summer.

Next to the library is the theater. The stage is now dark where famous actresses, like Margo Martindale, once performed.

"We want to hear from potential buyers, so we can accommodate them through the auction process," said Wellings.

Wellings said many people have shown interest in purchasing the campus. However, because of confidentiality, those names were not released to us.

"It's really a good mix of buyers. I think that's important to make an auction like this successful," explained Wellings.

The entire campus is more than 112 acres, filled with 168 years of history that could soon have a new beginning.

"We want to encourage people to use their imagination. Think about what a facility like this can be used for," said Wellings.

While there's no word how much the school could get for everything, it is expected to be enough to cover all debt including unpaid wages for former employees.

The bankruptcy auction for the former Lon Morris College campus is scheduled for December 13th in Dallas.

However, we have learned the Texas Methodist Foundation and the Texas Attorney General's office have filed paperwork to delay the auction, over a dispute in more than $260,000 in endowment funds.
