Texas artists help East Texas hearts

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - It's art that will touch your heart.

Artists from East Texas are on a mission to save lives.

"Started everything over, took all of it off, sanded it back down," says Kevin O'Halloran.

O'Halloran is a Tyler artist with a heart.

"Hammers and screwdrivers and construction adhesive and all sorts of things I don't think a lot of artists use," says O'Halloran.

He worked for a month to make this while the finishing touches were put on the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital.

"Through the art we're trying to teach people to understand they need to be educated about heart disease. It's still the number one killer in America for both men and women," says John Moore with Trinity Mother Frances Health System.

The art will be displayed inside the hospital starting next week for the grand opening.

People will be able to view all of the pieces of art and bid on them.

"Used to help purchase equipment in the future, help patients be treated that need new types of treatment," says Moore.

Guitars, birds, and of course roses, O'Halloren is just one of 10 artists taking part in Art @ Heart.

Each heart is unique, and holds special meaning to the artist.

"There was one really personal touch, the prince frog at the bottom, my wife's idea, I did that for her,"
says O'Halloran.

Each hopes their original pieces of art will make a difference for someone else's heart.

"Somebody is going to actually get some benefit to their life out of something I've done. Which is nice," says O'Halloran.
